Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Topic: Women and Battlestar
Title:  Battlestar Galactica Takes the Bedchel Test

Let's start with one of the pivotal moment between the two most important female characters on Battlestar:  Roslin asks Starbuck to go retrieve the Arrow of Apollo. They talk about religion, survival, death, treason -- but the most important part of the conversation to Starbuck is about Bill Adama and how he lied to her.

This scene from Kobol's Last Gleaming, by a strict interpretation of Bedchel, gets a:
FAIL

*****************************

Boomer finds out she's a Cylon sleeper agent from her sister Eights.   She’s just not into talking about guys at this point.
This scene from Kobol's Last Gleaming gets a:
PASS

  *********************************

Kara was a like a big sister to Sharon (well, Boomer). Here they are, Sharon in the brig, talking about raiders and how they resurrect.
This scene from Scar rates a:
PASS

 ********************************************

Roslin and Tory discuss the subversion of the democratic process and stealing an election.    Not a man.
This scene from Lay Down Your Burdens gets a:
PASS

****************************************************

Roslin gives the stolen Cylon baby to Maya, along with the command that the baby's adoption must be top secret.   Cottle's presence in this scene doesn't violate The Rule – nobody’s talking about him.
Lucky the Cylon baby they are talking about is a girl -- so this scene from Downloaded can be rated:
PASS

**********************************

Caprica Six and Boomer talk about identity, individuality, humanity, machinery and peace. Head!Baltar lurks, but they don’t talk about him. This scene from Downloaded is a:
PASS

 **********************************

Personal responsibility, drugs, honesty -- seems like this scene will pass with no problems. But then Kat cries about the most important thing to her, "Please just let me tell the Admiral!" and it becomes a conversation about a man.
I'm afraid I have to rate this scene from The Passage is a:
FAIL

******************************************

Roslin and Elosia ask the question:   Can one woman find meaning by leading the 40,000 last surviving members of the human race to salvation?   Nah – it takes the love of a good man to make things meaningful.
Sorry, but these scenes from The Hub:
FAIL

*****************************

An apology, visions, the future of Cylons and the human/Cylon alliance -- actually, it's a pretty awkward conversation and it ends with Roslin inserting her foot into her mouth. But it's not about a man.
This scene from Deadlock:
PASS

*************************************

At first Cally was concerned that her man might be sleeping with Tory – but by this scene, she’s got bigger treachery to talk about, “You’re all frakkin’ Cylons!”

Hate to see a conversation between women end like this, but I say this scene from The Tie That Binds is a :
PASS

********************************

I wanted to see Ellen represented on this list --here she is with Tory, discussing volunteering for the dangerous rescue-Hera mission. Not talking about a guy.
This scene from Daybreak:
PASS

FINAL REFLECTION:   When women do interact on BSG they most often pass the Bechdel Test (I was pretty tough during my administration of the test above).   However, women just don't interact on Battlestar as much I think they should have.   For example -- in the Mini Series, I could only find ONE example of women conversing, and it was an awfully short talk (Cally asks Starbuck how many people lived in Caprica City, and Starbuck answers "Seven million.")   I wish there had been more chance for women/women relationships to develop on BSG.
